Pellitteri Waste Systems will take over curbside garbage and recycling pickup in McFarland starting on Jan. 1, 2014, which will mean a new pickup day for residents on the eastern half of the village.

“We will service the village over a two-day period (Tuesdays and Wednesdays),” said a Pellitteri spokesperson. “So, approximately half of the Village residents will have a new trash and recycling pick-up day.”

Currently all trash and recycling in the village is picked up on Tuesdays.

For residents on the west half of the village that will remain the same. For residents on east half of the village Wednesday will be the new pickup day.

The switch will occur on Tuesday, Jan. 7 and Wednesday, Jan. 8. The last day the village will be serviced by Waste Management is Tuesday Dec. 31.

The dividing line will be Sighting Road, Johnson Street, Milwaukee Street and Marsh Road.

Milwaukee Street will be serviced on Tuesday. On Marsh and Sighting roads people on the odd side of the street will be serviced on Wednesday, the even side on Tuesday. On Johnson Street addresses 6004-6306 will have the odd numbers serviced on Wednesday and even numbers on Tuesday. The rest of Johnson is serviced on Wednesday.

The switch will occur on Tuesday, Jan. 7 and Wednesday, Jan. 8. The last day the village will be serviced by Waste Management is Tuesday Dec. 31.

Recycling pickup will remain every other week and will coincide with whichever day trash is picked up. Trash and recycling carts are serviced at separate times during the day. Carts must be set out by 6 a.m. and placed in the correct position for pickup, and exact pick-up times may vary from week to week according to the Pellitteri website.

All residents should have received a letter from Pellitteri in the mail with a collection calendar and an overview of the new process.

With Pellitteri the amount of recyclable items will increase. The list of expanded recyclables was included in the mailed pamphlet and can also be viewed on the Pellitteri website.

McFarland will be the 12th municipality serviced by Pellitteri’s fully-automated curbside collection. The company also services Fitchburg, Middleton, Dunn, Oregon and Verona.

“We are excited to start servicing the Village of McFarland residents in 2014 with our automated waste and recycling collection service,” said Danielle Pellitteri, vice president of sales. “We have been working hand in hand with the village public works and village administration to ensure the McFarland resident’s waste removal needs are fully met.”

Last year Pellitteri opened a state of the art recycling facility just north of the village near Marsh Road. The 55,000 square foot facility processes 130 to 150 tons of material a day.

In July the village board approved a five-year contract with Pellitteri for curbside refuse and recycling services. Pellitteri offered the lowest bid by a substantial margin over Waste Management – which has serviced the village for over two decades.

Going with Pellitteri will save the village nearly $600,000 over the next five years, based on the bids from the two companies.
